Organ meat is the smallest portion of the 80/10/10 raw feeding ratio, but it punches far above its weight nutritionally. Muscle meat and bone get most of the attention, yet organs are where a huge share of the vitamins and minerals in a raw diet actually come from. Here's exactly what each organ contributes, and why variety matters.
Liver: The Nutritional Powerhouse
Liver is often called nature's multivitamin, and for good reason. It's exceptionally dense in vitamin A (critical for vision, immune function, and skin health), B vitamins (energy metabolism), copper, and iron in a highly bioavailable form. Liver should make up about half of the organ portion of a balanced raw diet — but not more, since vitamin A can build up to excess if liver is overfed relative to the rest of the diet. A little goes a long way, which is exactly why the 5% (roughly) liver guideline within the 10% organ portion exists.
Kidney: The Underrated Half
Kidney rounds out the organ portion and offers a nutrient profile liver doesn't fully cover — it's rich in selenium (an antioxidant mineral supporting immune and thyroid function) and B vitamins in its own right, with a milder nutrient concentration than liver that makes it easier to feed in slightly larger amounts. Heart: Muscle Meat's Nutritional Cousin
Heart occupies an interesting middle ground — structurally it's a muscle, so it's often counted toward the muscle meat portion rather than the organ portion, but nutritionally it behaves more like an organ. It's one of the richest natural sources of taurine, an amino acid essential for heart and eye health in cats especially (cats can't synthesize enough taurine on their own, making dietary sources non-negotiable). Heart is also dense in CoQ10, a nutrient that supports cellular energy production. Including heart regularly is one of the easiest ways to boost taurine intake naturally.
Spleen and Pancreas: The Lesser-Known Organs
Less commonly available but valuable when accessible, spleen is notably rich in iron and supports healthy blood, while pancreas contains natural digestive enzymes that can aid nutrient breakdown. These aren't essential to source every week the way liver and kidney are, but they're worth rotating in when available for the additional nutritional diversity.
Why Variety Across Organs (and Proteins) Matters
