Joint Stiffness in Older Dogs: What to Try Before the Vet Visit
Slow to get up in the morning. Hesitating at the stairs. A little stiff after a nap. These are the early signs of joint stiffness owners notice long before it looks like a real problem — and this is exactly the window where supplement support does the most good.
Why joints stiffen with age
Cartilage — the cushioning tissue between bones in a joint — wears down over years of normal movement. As it thins, joints lose some of their natural shock absorption and inflammation increases around the joint, which is what produces the stiffness and occasional pain. It's a slow, mechanical process, not a sudden injury, which is why it's easy to miss until it's fairly progressed.
Two different approaches, and why we carry both
Turmeric Wellness+ (Turmeric and MCT Oil Blend) works on the inflammation side. Turmeric's active compound is anti-inflammatory, and it's paired with black pepper here specifically because black pepper meaningfully improves how much of that compound the body actually absorbs — turmeric alone is poorly absorbed on its own. This is the pick for managing the day-to-day soreness and swelling around a joint.
Hip & Joint Health (NZ Green Lipped Mussels) works on the joint tissue itself. Green-lipped mussel is naturally rich in glucosamine and chondroitin, the building blocks cartilage needs, along with omega-3s that support the anti-inflammatory side too. This is the more direct "feed the joint" option, and it's a strong long-term pick for a dog already showing consistent stiffness.
When to use one vs. both
A dog just starting to slow down, with occasional stiffness after rest, can reasonably start with either. A dog with a noticeable, consistent limp or stiffness that doesn't ease up after a few minutes of moving around benefits from both together — anti-inflammatory support plus cartilage-building support are solving two different parts of the same problem.
What supplements can't do
None of this replaces a vet diagnosis if the limp is sudden, one-sided, or the dog won't bear weight on a leg at all — that's an injury or a more serious orthopedic issue, not ordinary age-related stiffness, and needs to be looked at directly. Supplement support is for the slow, general stiffening that comes with age, not for diagnosing what's actually wrong when something changes suddenly.
The realistic timeline
Joint supplements are not fast-acting like a pain medication — most owners notice a real difference after 4-6 weeks of consistent daily use, because cartilage support works by improving joint tissue over time, not by masking pain in the moment. Consistency matters more than dose size here.
